  • Why Your Cup Sleeves Jam and Your Lids Pop Off

    A server fighting a sleeve of cups one-handed and a delivery arriving with lids off are usually the same defect wearing two costumes. It is the rim.

    What a rolled rim is for

    The top edge of a moulded cup is curled back over on itself into a small bead. That bead does three separate jobs: it holds each cup a fraction clear of the one below it in a stack, it gives a lid skirt something to grip, and it stops a cut edge meeting a lip.

    Rolling it takes tooling time and a moment of cycle. Skipping or shortening it saves a supplier money on every single cup.

    Failure one: the solid column

    Without a bead, cups seat into each other. A sleeve stops being a stack and becomes a single plastic column that has to be twisted apart with two hands.

    In a queue, at a bar, that is seconds per serve times every serve of the night. Nobody logs it as a product fault; it just makes the bar slow.

    Failure two: the lid that lets go

    Lids do not clamp the cup wall, they grip the rim bead. Under-roll it and the lid has less to hold, so it seats without a proper click and lets go at the first knock in a delivery bag.

    This is why lids must be matched to a rim diameter and roll profile rather than to a size name on a carton.

    The two-second audit

    Run a thumbnail round the top edge of a cup. Smooth bead: rolled. Distinct edge you can catch a nail on: not.

    Then seat a lid and turn the cup upside down over a sink. Those two checks, on a sample, before the pallet — and both failures stop being your problem.

    What PET is

    Polyethylene terephthalate is the glass-clear one: hard, glossy, genuinely transparent rather than merely see-through, and the reason a layered iced drink can look like a photograph on a counter.

    It buys that clarity with rigidity. A hard grip crazes the wall white and the mark never goes away; a sharp cold shock against the metal of an ice bin can start a split at the rim and run it down the side.

    What PP is

    Polypropylene is faintly hazy — side by side against PET it reads very slightly milky — and in exchange it simply does not care. Squeeze it and it gives; let go and it returns. Drop it, ice it, hand it to a child.

    Most buyers who insisted on glass-clarity were actually buying survivability and did not know there was a choice.

    Choosing by where the cup lives

    Poured, carried, set down, indoors — cocktail bars, cafe counters, display drinks — is PET country, and the clarity earns its keep.

    Gripped, iced, dropped, carried across a concourse, handed to children — festivals, pools, stadiums, schools — is PP country, and clarity is the wrong thing to be optimising.

    The one-second test

    Squeeze the side wall between thumb and finger. Sharp crackle and a white stress line: PET. Silent give and no mark: PP.

    Run it on whatever is in your storeroom right now. If the result surprises you, that is worth knowing before the next pallet.

    Name the resin first

    PET is glass-clear, rigid, glossy — and it crazes white under a hard grip and splits when cold-shocked. PP is faintly hazy, flexible, quiet — it bends and comes back. Both photograph identically and both get sold as clear plastic cups.

    Squeeze the wall of one you already own. The crackle answers the question no listing will.

    Ask for the wall gauge

    Sturdiness is a number. Flexibility is the resin. Conflating the two is exactly how thin cups get sold as tough ones and rigid cups get sold as sturdy ones.

    A gauge on the quote turns an argument about feel into something anybody can check with a set of scales and a case count.

    Check the rim, then the lid

    A rolled rim is a smooth bead that de-nests a sleeve one-handed and seats a lid with a click. An unrolled rim jams the sleeve into a column and pops lids in transit.

    Quote cups and lids together, matched by rim diameter and roll profile, and run the upside-down test before a pallet exists.

    Then work out what you can actually pour

    Cup sizes are rim capacity, measured to the brim of an empty cup. Take off a sensible fill line, then take off the ice, and a sixteen becomes about a ten.

    Pours per case is the number your bar budgets against. Get both figures on the quote and the whole costing stops lying to you.

    Finally, buy against a file

    Resin, gauge, rim, lid, print and PMS held on record is the only thing that stops a cup getting quietly thinner between runs.

    The cup is simple. Buying it well is a spec sheet, and now you have one.
